Dr. Stephen Todd Newman

newman

Dr. Stephen Todd Newman was born and raised in Southern California. A graduate of St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano and the University of Southern California, he moved east immediately after college to conduct and publish research at Harvard Medical School, in the laboratory of Dr. Gloria Lee at Harvard’s Center for Neurologic Disease. He then followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and attended the Boston University School of Medicine, where he discovered his passion for comprehensive patient care and extended his research by studying the effect of biphasic defibrillators on porcine (pig) physiology.

Dr. Newman returned to his roots in California and completed an internship in surgery and a residency in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at UCLA-Ronald Reagan Medical Center, consistently rated the #1 medical center in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. During residency he trained with Dr. Ron Busutil, a premier liver transplant surgeon, and the renowned anesthesiologist Dr. C. Phillip Larsen.

Following his training at UCLA, Dr. Newman served for a decade as an Anesthesiologist and Critical Care physician at Hoag Memorial Hospital, in Newport Beach. There he spent significant time in both inpatient and outpatient settings and cared for a significantly diverse patient population. It was here that Dr. Newman developed a special interest in a more targeted, customized approach to health and wellness. He designed and implemented a system-wide protocol for the pre- and intra-operative

It was here that Dr. Newman developed a special interest in a more targeted, customized approach to health and wellness. He designed and implemented a system-wide protocol for the pre- and intra-operative

warming of surgical patients. Titled the “safe and warm” protocol, it reduces infection rates, lowers blood loss, reduces length of stay in the hospital and improves patient satisfaction. This protocol is still in use throughout the Providence/Hoag Hospital system today. A lifelong student of martial arts, Todd actively trains in jiu-jitsu and MMA and brings this energy and precision into every aspect of patient care. Since 2007 he has served as Team Doctor for the St. Margaret’s Varsity Football team (winner of 2 State Championships). As a founding member of the Tartan Alumni Association and the first St. Margaret’s Alumni Council President, Todd also sat on the St. Margaret’s Board of Trustees for 6 years. He is a founding board member of Troops Direct, a non-profit organization focused on supply and support for deployed members of all branches of the United States Military and was honored in 2011 with a Marine Corp commendation (and the flag flown over the firebase) for his efforts during Operation Enduring Freedom. Dr. Newman has worked with the non-profit project Hearfeltcardiacprojects.org and it founder Holly Morrell for many years to bring cardiac screenings to the local community. Dr. Newman was recognized for his work and community service as a Physician of Excellence by the OCMA in 2017. Dr. Newman holds board certifications in Anesthesiology and Critical Care. He lives in South County with his wife, two children ages 14 and 12 and his 180lb Great Dane.
